Support owned exception payload construction - #9734
Construct owned simple exception wrappers through their base constructor.
Forward one-field wrappers' GC traversal and clearing to their base, so allocations of owned wrappers retain cycle-collection behavior.
Add an external Rust integration test for an Exception subclass with an extra native field, including catches, chaining, and Python subclass constructor overrides.
The existing allocating slot_new implementations and private PyBaseException::new visibility are unchanged.
Motivation
A downstream native exception needs an owned base payload to embed alongside its own fields. Currently PyBaseException::py_new is unimplemented, and the generated PyException::py_new is unreachable. slot_new returns an allocated Python object instead of an owned payload. Completing the existing payload-construction trait operation avoids exposing fields or changing allocation/layout rules.
For example, OpenBlob needs catchable Python exceptions that retain a structured diagnostic in Rust storage, rather than treating mutable Python attributes as the diagnostic's source of truth. This reduced downstream example uses miette::Report, which owns a miette::Diagnostic with code, help, labels/spans, and source data. It is not a proposed RustPython dependency. Base-layout/traversal implementations, registration, and Python-facing inspection methods are omitted from this excerpt:
#[pyclass(module = "diagnostic_example", name = "DiagnosticError", base = PyException, traverse = "manual")]#[repr(C)]#[derive(Debug)]structDiagnosticError{base:PyException,diagnostic: miette::Report,}implDiagnosticError{fnfrom_diagnostic(diagnostic: miette::Report,vm:&VirtualMachine,) -> PyResult<PyRef<Self>>{let class = Self::make_static_type();let args:FuncArgs = vec![vm.ctx.new_str(diagnostic.to_string()).into()].into();Self{base:PyException::py_new(&class, args, vm)?,
diagnostic,}.into_ref_with_type(vm, class)}}
The actual report is passed as an ordinary Rust argument to from_diagnostic, not through Python arguments or the fixed Constructor::py_new signature. That trait method is used only to initialize the embedded base; the downstream factory builds and allocates the complete native payload. For example, the host can move an existing structured report into it:
let diagnostic = miette::miette!(
code = "openblob::nested_tool",
help = "Check the nested tool's configuration.",
labels = vec![miette::LabeledSpan::at(0..20,"nested call failed")],"nested tool failed").with_source_code(miette::NamedSource::new("script.py","toolbox.fs.read_file('missing')",));let exception = DiagnosticError::from_diagnostic(diagnostic, vm)?;
The report remains Rust-owned when Python catches, reraises, or overrides presentation methods on the exception. Rust can still use its code(), help(), labels(), and source_code() APIs directly; a Python str would not preserve that structured diagnostic interface. A Python inspection method can return a fresh dictionary without making that dictionary authoritative. The missing operation is the owned base construction at PyException::py_new, not allocation via slot_new.
Verification
The owned-construction regression tests failed at the existing constructor stubs before the implementation and pass with it:
The five focused tests (four construction tests plus one isolated GC test) include an argument traversal check and collection of an exception self-cycle retaining an argument object. The cycle regression failed before the traversal forwarding change and passes with it. Its own integration-test executable prevents other interpreter fixtures from contending for the process-global collector lock, which can cause a forced collection to skip. No collection retries or assertion weakening were added.
Verified on native Linux with Rust 1.99.1 and CPython 3.15.2:
Workspace tests excluding WASM, venvlauncher, and C-API: 1,505 passed, 20 ignored, including doctests.
After the test-isolation follow-up, the exact Linux CI workspace command passes locally: 1,482 passed, 2 ignored (its --lib --bins --tests selection excludes doctests). Both focused executables also passed 50 repeated four-thread runs each after reproducing the original CI failure.
C-API tests from crates/capi: 149 passed, 2 ignored.
cargo run --locked --release -- -m test test_exceptions: SUCCESS (112 run, 13 skipped).
Workspace and separate C-API Clippy checks, formatting, and configured pre-commit checks pass.
Additional target checks:
On wasm32-wasip2, Wasmtime 47.0.3 runs all five focused tests across the two executables (4 + 1) with compiler,stdio,gc and upstream's target flags (including its 1 MiB stack). The sample marker uses usize to avoid imposing a different payload alignment on 32-bit targets. Reproduce with CARGO_TARGET_WASM32_WASIP2_RUNNER="wasmtime run --dir=." cargo test --locked --target wasm32-wasip2 -p rustpython-vm --no-default-features --features compiler,stdio,gc --test exception_payload_construction --test exception_payload_gc -- --test-threads=1 using upstream's target flags, not an inherited -D warnings override.
The complete downstream miette::Report example was compiled and run on native Linux and wasm32-wasip2. Its Rust factory takes an already-created report; code, help, label/span, and named source data remain available after Python overrides.
This is constructor/payload validation, not a claim that OpenBlob's complete feature/flag combination can adopt current upstream unchanged. With host_env enabled, current upstream's unchanged WASIp2 path fails linking signal-emulation symbols (raise, signal, __SIG_ERR, __SIG_IGN). OpenBlob's strict -D warnings also encounters existing warnings in untouched upstream WASI code. Those baseline build issues are outside this PR.
Windows and Miri were not run locally. CI run 42306629575 is green on commit 33ef0c275d9ae47e7bc1e47a3c271826a72a4aa3: 28 checks passed and one benchmark comparison was skipped. This includes the Linux/macOS/Windows Rust suites, Windows CPython suite, WASM checks and WASI runtime suite, lint, docs, and the Miri job. The PR remains draft and unmerged.

Implementation, tests, investigation, and this description were prepared with OpenCode using GPT-6.1 Sol. Independent code reviews used GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Astra (high effort).
The contributor manually ran the focused external native-exception integration target in the Linux devcontainer and confirmed all five tests passed (zero failures). This human verification was separate from the automated checks above.

Exception payload construction works for the covered cases. Cyclic exception payloads may not be fully reclaimed, and the base-constructor delegation for generated wrappers has not been re-confirmed at the current head. Both are bounded and can be handled as follow-ups.

The CI failure is in our GC cycle regression: Linux reports that the argument object remains alive. I’m reproducing it with CI’s threaded feature configuration before changing the test or collector code.

Implement the existing payload constructor for BaseException and generated simple exception wrappers without changing their allocating slots. Forward one-field wrapper traversal and clearing to the base so allocated owned wrappers remain visible to cyclic GC.
Add external-crate regressions for owned arguments, fresh state, native fields, Python constructor overrides, and collection of wrapper cycles.

Use a pointer-sized marker so the test subclass does not introduce a stronger payload alignment than PyException on wasm32. The existing compile-time layout checks remain unchanged.
Verified the focused regressions and the separate retained-miette example under Wasmtime on wasm32-wasip2. This changes test storage only, not the exception construction implementation.

Move the cycle-collection regression unchanged into a separate integration test executable. Forced collection may skip when another interpreter holds the process-global collector lock, so concurrent fixtures cannot reliably assert collection after a single call.
Preserve the regression and feature gates without changing collector behavior, adding retries, or weakening the weak-reference assertion. Reproduced the original failure with four test threads; both isolated targets pass 50 repeated runs and the exact workspace CI command passes locally.
