Dependency

This draft follows #9563, now rebased onto its published strict-default common binder head 832f9bb454. Merge the common change first.

GitHub cannot use a fork-only branch as the base branch of an upstream PR, so the base is main. Until #9563 lands, the comparison includes its common commits. The queue-only change is 999d1f3f82.

Summary

  • Replace the queue-local clinic_args adapter and manual ArgSpec parsing with four ordinary FromArgs structs.
  • Remove temporary argument buffers, cells, and object clones introduced only for binding.
  • Keep raw objects through numeric conversion and queue operations, preserve conversion order and queue-specific diagnostics, and distinguish omitted values from explicit None.
  • Keep registration downcasts consuming their fields instead of cloning them.

The queue-only implementation is unchanged by this rebase: one file, +80/-107. The stack now includes #9563's strict defaults, dispatch overrides, custom-parser composition fix, and SQLite marker cleanup.

Validation

Fresh runtime validation of this rebased queue head is pending. The common parent has passed a SQLite-enabled release build, strict all-target workspace Clippy, and 19 regression modules (4,577 tests run, 455 skipped); its C-API and workspace aggregates continue after publication.

Before the rebase, the unchanged queue implementation passed its focused probe on both RustPython and CPython 3.15.0: 11 signatures, 25 invalid-call checks, conversion order, and queue round trips. Its release build and strict workspace Clippy also passed.

The full interpreter queue suite was skipped because it requires a GIL-disabled runtime; that invocation executed zero tests. This draft is not a claim of a complete fresh green run.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved argument validation across built-in functions and constructors, including clearer handling of missing, unexpected, duplicate, and excess arguments.
    • Argument-count and keyword errors are now reported before some invalid values are converted, making error messages more consistent.
    • Preserved specialized error messages for functions with custom argument handling.
  • Compatibility
    • Optional server hostnames can now be supplied either positionally or by name in both supported SSL wrapping calls.

Explain Change →

Walkthrough

The change separates displayed signatures from argument-binding metadata, validates known argument shapes before conversion, and updates generated and custom parsers to declare or defer binding rules. It also migrates _interpqueues parsing and adjusts constructor argument handling, with tests for validation order and diagnostics.

Changes: Argument Binding

Layer / File(s) Summary
Binding metadata and dispatch
crates/derive-impl/src/from_args.rs, crates/derive-impl/src/pyclass.rs, crates/vm/src/function/argument.rs, crates/vm/src/function/signature.rs
Generated argument types and signatures now carry binding metadata separately from displayed parameters. Native call flags use binding metadata, including metadata for flattened parameters and custom parsers.
Shape-based argument validation
crates/vm/src/function/argument.rs, extra_tests/snippets/vm_argument_errors.py
Known parameter shapes provide positional bounds and pre-conversion checks for missing, duplicate, and unexpected arguments. Tests cover flattened and variadic parameters, receivers, error ordering, and custom parser behavior.
Parser and constructor adaptations
crates/stdlib/src/_datetime.rs, crates/vm/src/builtins/{int,object,property,str,type}.rs, crates/vm/src/stdlib/{_interpreters,_operator,_thread,typevar}.rs, crates/wasm/src/ssl.rs
Built-in and standard-library parsers declare binding metadata or retain custom argument checks. TypeVar uses flattened constraints, and SSL hostname arguments accept positional or named values.
Queue argument parsing
crates/vm/src/stdlib/_interpqueues.rs
Queue handlers replace per-function ArgSpec parsing with derived argument structures. Handlers retain Python objects for conversion, and queue operations and their existing validation remain in place.

The binding and queue changes have no established merge-blocking defect. Additional regression tests would strengthen protection for malformed binding metadata and explicit None arguments; complete normal validation before merging.

Use explicit binding metadata for ordinary FromArgs derives and standard argument primitives. Validate complete argument shapes in CPython Clinic order before converters run, while leaving legacy and custom display-only parsers opaque. Keep constructor fast-path arity wording and remove redundant str keyword counting.

Assisted-by: OpenAI Codex:model version not exposed
When a known binding receives no positional arguments and requires no parameters, there can be no missing or duplicate parameters. Validate the supplied keyword names directly without walking optional fields.

Assisted-by: OpenAI Codex:model version not exposed
Require explicit binding metadata or parser exceptions, reject malformed known compositions, and keep TypeVar constraints before keyword-only fields.

Assisted-by: OpenAI Codex:model version not exposed
Let explicitly custom parsers receive calls independently of display signatures, while retaining optimized flags for ordinary Clinic signatures.

Assisted-by: OpenAI Codex:model version not exposed
Retire the two unexpected-success markers through update_lib after validating the positional-only errors. The full SQLite suite passes.

Assisted-by: OpenAI Codex:model version not exposed
Do not resurrect named checks from display metadata when composing an explicitly custom parser. Keep CSV duplicate validation at its own parser boundary.

Assisted-by: OpenAI Codex:model version not exposed
Accept server_hostname by position or keyword in both SSL wrapping methods, matching CPython and the native backend. This keeps their shapes canonical under the strict default binder.

Assisted-by: OpenAI Codex:model version not exposed
Use the shared call-form helper when reporting a positional and keyword duplicate. Unnamed nested parsers such as CSV omit parentheses, while named methods retain them. Add direct coverage for both forms.

Keep the native legacy-parser conversion-order assertion unchanged. No-thread builds load a frozen Python function, so check its normal unexpected-keyword error explicitly instead of expecting C-parser conversion order.

Use the shared Clinic validation from RustPython#9563 and derive queue signatures directly. Keep raw inputs alive through numeric conversions, preserve queue-specific diagnostics and defaults, and remove ArgSpec/Cell binding, parsed vectors, and redundant input clones.

Test compile-time rejection through ordinary binding.

Add a compile-fail test that instantiates an ordinary binding with malformed metadata, such as (PosArgs, i32). The current test calls BindingShape::validated directly, so it would still pass if check_before_convert stopped rejecting that composition.

Add regression tests for explicit None arguments.

Test both optional fields of create and put with None, and assert TypeError. Also test omitted arguments. A binding regression that treats None as omitted could otherwise pass queue round-trip tests while selecting defaults.
